Members of the Polish community urged to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme to secure their rights
HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is urging Polish nationals who were living in the UK by 31 December 2020 and their family members (who don’t have another form of valid UK immigration status in the UK already) to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) as soon as possible at www.gov.uk/eusettlementscheme
EUSS status needs to be applied for to ensure that they are able to work, access public services and that any benefit payments that they are receiving, including payments for HMRC benefits such as Child Benefit and tax credits, do not stop.
The deadline to apply for EU, EEA and Swiss citizens living in the UK by 31 December 2020 was 30 June 2021. Even though this date has passed, it is possible to make a late application to the Home Office where there are reasonable grounds for missing the deadline. There is no deadline for eligible family members to join someone who already has status under EUSS in the UK. They can come to the UK at any time but need to make an EUSS application within 90 days of arriving.
In May, the UK Government sent letters to EU, EEA and Swiss citizens giving them step by step, practical advice on how to apply to the EUSS. In August, further letters were sent to those who may still need to apply to the scheme, to let them know how to make a late application.
The UK Government continues to use all appropriate channels to encourage those who may be eligible for the EUSS to apply and secure the status to which they are entitled. Everyday thousands of people are being granted their UK immigration status through the hugely successful EUSS. As of 30 June 2021, over six million EUSS applications have been received including over one million by Polish citizens.
